Pablo Escobar (Drug Lord) - On This Day
Profession: Drug Lord
Biography: Pablo Escobar founded and led the Medellín Cartel, which dominated the cocaine trade into the United States during the 1980s and early 1990s. Known as "the king of cocaine," Escobar became one of the wealthiest criminals in history.
Escobar was born into a poor family in Rionegro, Colombia in 1949. He dropped out of school and engaged in criminal activities from a young age. In 1976, he founded the Medellín Cartel, which established smuggling routes from South America to the United States. By the 1980s, the cartel was shipping up to 80 tons of cocaine per month.
During this period, Escobar bribed and intimidated Colombian politicians and public officials. He offered them the now-famous choice between "plata o plomo"—that is, silver or lead, whether they would take a bribe or be murdered. Escobar soon expanded the Medellín Cartel by bringing several other drug lords into the fold after a meeting.
Despite his criminal activities, Escobar entered politics in 1982 as part of the Liberal Party. He was responsible for community projects that earned him a reputation among the poor akin to Robin Hood. His political ambitions were undone by the Colombian and U.S. governments, however, leading him to orchestrate violent acts of retaliation.
Escobar's criminal activities included kidnappings, murders, and acts of terrorism. He was involved in the 1985 Palace of Justice siege, which resulted in over 100 deaths. In 1991, he surrendered to authorities and was housed in his self-built prison, La Catedral, but escaped in 1992 when authorities attempted to move him.
Ultimately, in December of 1993, Escobar was killed by Colombian National Police on a rooftop in Medellín. The Medellín Cartel soon crumbled after his death. Escobar's funeral was attended by over 25,000 people, and he remains a controversial figure in Colombia.
Escobar married María Victoria Henao in 1976 and had two children. He was known for his luxurious lifestyle and properties. His life has inspired numerous books, films, and TV series, including the popular Netflix series "Narcos" (2015-2017).
