A Magical Night in Malibu With Author Taylor Jenkins Reid
Highlights of the Chase United Cardmembers event included a meet-and-greet and Q&A conversation
Summers in Southern California boast sunny weather, breezy beach days and, if you’re lucky, a one-of-a-kind experience in Malibu. For Chase United Cardmembers, a highlight of the season was the night they met Taylor Jenkins Reid.
On July 18, fans lined up on the Malibu Pier with books in tow to enjoy an exclusive meet-and-greet with their favorite author, known for her bestselling novels “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo,” “Daisy Jones & The Six,” “Malibu Rising” and others.
To kick off the event, the group of 50 Cardmembers was greeted upon arrival with a customized leather bookmark, which they could use with their signed copy of “Carrie Soto Is Back.” Around the room, a bartender stayed busy pouring glasses of red and white wine all night, while trays of various hors d’oeuvres, including delicious mini lobster rolls and crab cakes, circled the room. The intention behind the event’s details was palpable to any familiar fan.

With panoramic views of crashing waves and the communal seating arrangement that quickly turned strangers into reading buddies, the ambiance was that of a lavish book club meeting at a friend’s house. And while the sweeping scenery and tasty bites were among the highlights, there was one thing that numerous attendees kept admiring throughout the night – the intimacy.

“I like that it’s small and intimate,” one Cardmember expressed. “If it was a lot of people, it wouldn’t have felt as unique and exclusive.”
For some guests, this wasn’t just an exciting opportunity as a Cardmember, but a core memory in the making: whether it be an excuse to take a trip, to reconnect with old friends or to turn dreams into reality.
“It was even more special than what I had envisioned,” said a Cardmember, who flew in for the day from San Francisco.
Another Cardmember flew from Washington, D.C., to L.A. to treat a longtime friend to a fun activity. “She’s a huge fan, so we thought, why not make a night out of it?”
During a conversation with Reid, Cardmembers were able to ask questions about her writing process, her advice to aspiring writers and her upcoming projects – one of which was a teaser about her new book with more details to be announced soon.
After the Q&A portion, the room was buzzing with joy. One Cardmember, who was dressed in head-to-toe green as a nod to Evelyn Hugo, said the evening was like “a peek behind the curtain, which you just wouldn’t get if you didn’t have this experience.”
Another Cardmember applauded the uniquely curated programming. “I would say it is higher level than I expected,” she said, noting that events like these give members access to something that they normally wouldn’t be able to attend.
“It was just a magical night,” a Cardmember said as the night concluded. “I was able to tell Taylor that the only fan letter I ever wrote was to her a few years ago. I’ve read all her books, and she’s someone who is really inspiring to me.”
