Mexican Motocross revs up Gussi prodn
Distrib financing 80% of $1.2 mil budget
HOLLYWOOD — The production arm of top Mexican indie distrib Gussi Films is out of the starting gate with “Motocross,” the directorial debut of local cinematographer Salvador “Chava” Cartas.
Distrib is financing 80% of the $1.2 million road movie, which starts shooting in Mexico City next week.
Pic, starring Iran Castillo, Daniel Martinez and Ximena Sarinana, is co-produced by helmer-producer Fernando Sarinana.
“Motocross” tracks two brothers on their way to Las Vegas to attend the U.S. Motocross Open.
Cartas was d.p. on various pics helmed by Sarinana including “Amar te duele,” “Ciudades oscuras” and “Cero y van cuatro.” He’s also worked on commercials, docus and shorts.
Gussi intends to co-produce two to four pics a year. It has committed to the next film by Jorge Ramirez-Suarez, helmer of U.K.-Mexican political thriller “Conejo en la luna” (Rabbit on the Moon), which Gussi released last year.

Gussi prebought the $2.5 million pic, a rare move for a company that has purchased a mere handful of Mexican pics in its 30-year history.
Ramirez-Suarez’s untitled project is set in Mexico City, where five families wreck their apartments while searching for rumored treasure hidden in the building. Gussi is expected to put up most of the budget.
Distrib inked an output deal with New Line last year and annually releases an average of 45 pics.
