24: Live Another Day Team Wins U.K. Production Guild Award

LONDON — The U.K. production team behind Twentieth Century Fox Television’s TV series “24: Live Another Day” was named team of the year at the Production Guild of Great Britain awards on Saturday. The awards, which took place at The Grove in Hertfordshire, recognize achievements made by guild members working in film or television within the production office, production accounts, location management, VFX, post-production or assistant directing roles.

The “24” team, which was led by producer and British Film Commission chairman Iain Smith, included unit production manager Kathy Nettleship, location manager Casper Mill and production accountant David Jones. “The production team delivered on every count, achieving a fast-paced, challenging shoot with precision. The speed of turnover of writing, shooting and going to air was unprecedented in British production with filming taking place around the clock and Fox’s U.S. air dates rolling as the team worked,” the guild said.

The logistically complex shoot, which took place predominantly in London between January and June 2014, was based at West London’s Gillette Building and filmed at Longcross Studios, major London airports, roads and transport systems and several iconic buildings, including Wembley Stadium and the Royal Courts of Justice.

Roy Button, executive VP and managing director, Warner Bros. Productions Ltd., received the Production Guild Contribution to the Industry Award for “his outstanding contribution to the development and sustainability of the U.K. film and TV industry.”

As head of physical production for Warner Bros. Productions Ltd, Button is responsible for all Warner Bros.’ films based out of the U.K., Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He has also been the driving force for Warner Bros.’ investment in Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, Europe’s largest studio, owned and run by Warner Bros. and the production base for films made, and being made, in the U.K. by a number of U.S. majors, including eight Harry Potter films, “Edge of Tomorrow,” “Jupiter Ascending,” “Tarzan,” “Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” and host to “Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation,” “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” amongst others, as well as the Leavesden Harry Potter Tour.

Button’s 46-year career in the film industry started with work as a runner, graduating up through the ranks of 1st and 2nd assistant director, production manager and producer. In his assistant director roles Button has worked with filmmakers including Richard Attenborough (“Cry Freedom,” “Gandhi” and “A Bridge Too Far”), Steven Spielberg (“Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Empire of the Sun”), Sydney Pollack (“Out of Africa”), Richard Marquand (“Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi”) and Richard Donner (“Superman”) as well as being a production manager for Clint Eastwood (“White Hunter,” “Black Heart”).

Button is involved with training programs within the U.K. film industry and is a member of the Film Industry Training Board and the board of the British Film Commission. “He is passionate about restructuring the direct work placement process on feature films and bringing further major motion pictures to the U.K.,” the guild said. Button was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the film industry.

Steve Papazian, president, worldwide physical production, Warner Bros., said: “Throughout our 20-year partnership Roy has championed the U.K. film community and no one flies the British flag higher than Roy.”

Assistant production accountant Jessamyn Keogh received the Production Guild Rising Star Award. Keogh began the Production Guild’s assistant production accountant training scheme, funded by Creative Skillset, in 2012, taking up placements on Sky1’s “Starlings” (season two), Channel 4’s “Top Boy” (season two) and Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted.” Since graduating in 2013, Keogh has “demonstrated a focus and dedication that has seen her move upwards in an astonishingly short period,” working as 1st assistant accountant on season five of E4’s “Misfits,” quickly followed by season five and six of ITV drama “Downton Abbey,” as well as upcoming comedy drama “Miss You Already” (S Films/New Sparta Films), starring Drew Barrymore and Toni Colette. Keogh is due to start shortly as 1st assistant accountant on high-profile upcoming BBC One drama “Taboo,” starring Tom Hardy.

Producer Mairi Bett received the Production Guild Inspiration Award, in recognition of her “long-standing dedication to assisting the career development of young producers and production crew.” Bett established Skyline Films with partner Steve Clark-Hall over 25 years ago, and her many co-producing credits include the upcoming “Victor Frankenstein” (Davis Entertainment), as well as in recent years “Closed Circuit” (Focus Features, Working Title), “The World’s End” (Working Title), Oscar-winning and BAFTA-nominated “Jane Eyre” (Focus Features/Ruby Films), “The Debt” (Marv Productions/Miramax), “Green Zone” (Working Title/Universal Pictures), and the BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated “United 93” (Working Title/Universal).

“Described by those in the industry as a ‘rock,’ ” the guild said, Bett is “widely regarded as an inspirational figure who is always prepared to lend her time, experience and expertise to mentor others.” In May 2014 Bett joined Archery Pictures as head of production and acted as exec producer on Asif Kapadia’s upcoming “Ali and Nino,” adapted from the novel of the same name by screenwriter Christopher Hampton.

The award winners were nominated by the Production Guild’s industry membership, and selected by juries of leading industry professionals. The Production Guild’s contribution to the industry award is nominated and awarded to an individual voted for by the Production Guild board.
